Jerez

Jerez de la Frontera is situated in the county of Andalucia and within the province of Cádiz at the bottom end of the Iberian Peninsula in Southern Spain.

Jerez became famous throughout the world for its sweet wines named after the town, which the British pronounced “sherry”. It is called “de la Frontera” because it once stood on the frontier between the Moorish and the Christian realms. Jerez is also famous, throughout the world, for its fine horses, brilliant singers and dancers of flamenco.

Considered as the wine and horse capital and the home of flamenco, Jerez possesses wonderful and exclusive tourist attractions. Wine and “bodegas” ,the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, the Bull-fighting Art Museum, the Clock Museum, the Zoo, the Congress Palace and the eldest area of the city are declared Artistic-historic area. The town has a markedly aristocratic flavor with wide streets and squares. The 11th century Moorish fortress, or Alcazaba, has been partially restored. Of special interest is its church, originally built by the Arabs as a mosque. Jerez celebrates its famous Horse Fair at the beginning of May each year.

Over 126,000 spectators turn up for the Jerez Motor Grand Prix weekend event. This is one of the largest, most popular and most talked about circuits in the world. This event is conducted at the Jerez Motor circuit, just a few kilometers form the airport. This is an exciting weekend in Jerez with the influx of tourists creating a carnival style atmosphere.

The province of Cádiz has a moderate climate with around 3200 sun hours a year equating to more than 300 days of sunshine each year. Jerez is one of the largest municipalities in Andalucía, with a population of over 200,000 people.

Primarily Jerez is a safe city where the locals are very welcoming of the college students.
