English Language Proficiency Test
for Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) grades English Language Performance on a scale of 1 to 6:

ICAO Levels

Level 1	Pre-elementary	Level 4	Operational
Level 2	Elementary	Level 5	Extended
Level 3	Pre-Operational	Level 6	Expert

In order to conform with ICAO Language Proficiency requirements, Pilots, Air Traffic Controllers and all others who use English in R/T communication on international routes must be at ICAO English Language Level 4 (Operational) or above.  This must be confirmed by successful completion of an airline industry approved test.

Those who are assessed at ICAO Level 4 must be re-tested every three years. Those who fail may not be licensed to operate on international routes.

FTE has developed an English Language Proficiency Test that is accepted by the UKCAA for license issue and it has a dedicated team of experienced aviation English examiners who are approved to issue ICAO ELP qualifications at all ICAO levels.  The test meets the requirements set by ICAO, and assesses English in the context of aviation. It includes some radio telephony communication, but is not a test of procedures.  The test is conducted face to face and lasts up to 30 minutes.  We are able to offer testing either at our training facility in Jerez or on a site convenient to you.

Intensive Aviation English Courses to ICAO level 4

Current Pilots and Controllers will need to be assessed as level 4 of English before the deadline of March 8th 2011 in order to keep their licences current and valid to operate with international flights. FTE offers Intensive English courses to current pilots and controllers wishing to raise their level of English to ICAO operational level 4.

FTE Prospective students will be required to be assessed as level 4 before commencement of their ATPL training at Jerez.

If you are interested in joining FTE as a student but do not have the required level 4, you can join one of our intensive training courses to raise your level and on satisfactory completion you will be given the opportunity to take the FTE aptitude tests at no extra cost.
