
The ab-initio course is a residential, integrated course taking students with little or no previous flying experience to the beginning of a career as an airline pilot. It carries JAR-FCL approval for the issue of a Commercial Pilot’s Licence/Instrument Rating (CPL/IR), with ATPL theory and MCC to JAR Integrated ATP standard (sometimes called Frozen ATPL).

A candidate must be at least 18 years of age to commence his APTL (A) training.
The integrated course is intense and demanding. In order to cope with the breadth and speed of delivery of the course, candidates need to be capable in Mathematics, English and Science based subjects. A minimum of five GCSE passes at level C or above (or equivalent) including English, Mathematics, and at least one science subject is necessary. Although not essential, Physics is highly desirable.
Instruction and all ground school exams are in English and of a technical nature. Sufficient written and oral English language is a prerequisite.
Furthermore, in accordance with ICAO Language Proficiency requirements, Pilots who use English in R/T communication on international routes must be assessed as ICAO English Language Level 4 (Operational) or above. This must be confirmed by successful completion of an airline industry approved test.
FTE is able to provide an English language assessment as part of the selection process to ensure that students have the required level of English for all elements of flight training. Intensive Aviation English Courses are also available at FTE for those students who might require them.
Aptitude tests are conducted by FTE in order to provide an assessment of suitability for pilot training. These tests include several written tests covering Maths and Physics, Numeracy and Verbal and Numerical Reasoning, and also a computer based assessment of manipulative and cognitive aptitudes.
Successful completion of the aptitude testing is compulsory for entry to FTE.
In addition, FTE is able to provide assistance with a full pilot selection program, which can be tailored to the specific requirements of any airline.
A UK CAA issued Initial JAA Class 1 medical is mandatory to commence training.
The medical must be conducted at the UK CAA´s Gatwick facility.

A lower cost syllabus, with a reduction of 20 hours single engine flying is offered to students holding a PPL. This alternative syllabus is only available subject to confirmation by FTE´s CFI. The emphasis of the syllabus is to assist students to achieve maximum performance during this intensive course.
