The MPL is a new initiative from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), which has been adopted by the Joint Aviation Authority (JAA) and the European Aviation safety Authority (EASA). The course was introduced after comments from the world’s airlines that the traditional training path through CPL/IR to an airline could be improved utilising modern technologies and training methodologies.
The MPL syllabus incorporates a large amount of simulator flying; specifically structured to develop the skills required of an airline pilot, in particular multi crew operations and threat and error management. This is in contrast to the CPL/IR syllabus, which is single pilot focussed and intended to qualify pilots for lower level operations. The ground-training component of MPL is exactly the same as for a CPL/IR course.
The FTE Jerez MPL syllabus has been approved by the UK CAA, as compliant with the requirements established by the JAA and EASA. It includes some single engine aircraft flying in a Piper P28 aircraft in order to achieve solo flight and night flying. It also includes some multi engine flight in a Piper P34 aircraft in order to teach the basics of such things as asymmetric flight and some specific instrument flying procedures. In addition the syllabus also includes upset training, or extreme unusual attitude recovery training, conducted in a Slingsby Firefly aircraft.
The majority of the training however will be conducted in FTE Jerez’s Mechtronix FFT-X Boeing 737NG Flight Simulation Training Device. This high level device will simulate airline operations, procedures and techniques.
Having completed the B737 training at Jerez, candidates will progress to the Bombardier Dash8 Q400 simulator, currently based at Farnborough, for type specific training, before completing training on Flybe’s Q400 aircraft at Exeter.
As elements of training such as the Jet Orientation Course (JOC) and previously mentioned upset training are both incorporated into the MPL syllabus, completion of the components above means that successful graduates are ready to immediately begin flying on the line with Flybe.
